14 Foster and steel PVD Physical Vapor Deposition Steel turns a different colour. PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) treatment of steel is an advanced physical process that allows the surface of stainless steel to be altered to achieve unique colouring and superior surface strength. In the PVD process, stainless steel is placed in a vacuum chamber where selected metals are heated until they turn into vapor. These metal vapors are then deposited on the stainless steel surface by a strong electrical discharge. The metal vapors are then enriched with special process gases, which allow the metal ions to physically stick to the surface of the stainless steel. The result is a coloured surface, which includes shades such as Gun Metal, Gold and Copper. This process gives the stainless steel treated with PVD an exceptional surface hardness, resistance to UV rays, hypoallergenic characteristics and greater resistance to wear and corrosion, making Foster appliances an ideal choice for sophisticated and functional kitchens.
